NATUROPATHIC IV THERAPY
Intravenous (IV) nutritional therapy is commonly used in many healthcare settings to help correct dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, and electrolyte imbalances. From a naturopathic point of view, IV therapy can be a powerful treatment tool for a wide variety of conditions. It can be used to correct deficiencies; it can also be used to deliver therapeutic doses of vitamins to push biochemical pathways in the body. For example, IV nutritional therapy can be used to support the immune system, promote energy production to relieve fatigue, normalize blood pressure, and relieve PMS symptoms and menstrual cramps.
Although nutritional therapy can be
administered to some degree through diet and oral supplementation, IV nutrition
is in many cases a more effective method of delivery. For example, most
nutrients are only absorbed and utilized by the body when the digestive system
is functioning optimally. Because IV nutritional therapy directly
delivers nutrients into the circulation without passing through the digestive
tract, patients with digestive problems can benefit from IV nutritional therapy
while they work with a naturopathic physician to improve their digestive
Symptoms such as indigestion, gas, bloating, and feelings of fullness can indicate disordered digestion. Taking acid blocking medications (even over the counter ones) reduces stomach acid which is necessary for proper absorption of protein, minerals, and vitamins.
Some nutrients, such as trace minerals, are increasingly low in, or absent from, our food supply, and may also be particularly difficult to absorb even in a relatively healthy digestive tract. For many of us, eating our fruits and vegetables is not enough anymore. Supplying these nutrients through IV therapy is a reliable and effective method of administration.
In addition, the amount of a nutrient that is needed for a desired therapeutic effect exceeds the amount that the body normally absorbs through the digestive tract. In these cases, IV nutritional therapy is an excellent means of getting the nutrient into the circulation and tissues where it is needed to promote healing. For example, vitamin C is being used more and more for a variety of conditions, with promising results, in doses that are sometimes more than 50 times the amount that the body normally takes in through the digestive system.
Alkaline IV Therapy is the administration of Sodium Bicarbonate intravenously — a therapy which was popularized by an Italian Oncologist, Dr. Simoncini. It can be used as an adjunctive therapy with Cancer as it alkalinizes the over-acidification of tissues, which is seen in a cancerous environment.
